Anton "Tony" Joseph Kulig, age 91, of Whitehall, died on Wednesday, December 13, 2017 in the Gundersen Tri-County Care Center in Whitehall.

Anton was born on May 17, 1926 on a farm in Maule Coulee, rural Independence, to William and Elizabeth (Wiench) Kulig.

Anton graduated from the Independence High School on May 26, 1944. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps for three years serving in China, Japan and Guam.

Anton married Doris Gruntzel on May 31, 1954 in Ss. Peter & Paul Catholic Church in Independence. He was employed with Bar-Non Mills, Inc. and Whitehall Ag Service for 32 years prior to his retirement.

Anton was an active member of Saint John's Catholic Church, being a member of the Knights of Columbus and serving as a Eucharistic Minister for 24 years. He was also a member of the Sura-Wiersgalla American Legion Post #186.

Anton enjoyed old time music, attending many Polka Festivals, and at one time played the concertina. Anton will be remembered for his extraordinary recall of life events and date of the event, a very rare ability.

Anton is survived by his wife, Doris; two sisters, Verna Halama and Adeline Puccini; a half-brother, Roland (Doris) Kulig; three half-sisters, Rosemary Sosalla, Renita (Art) Bohn and Ruth Marsolek; a sister-in-law, Theresa Kulig and many nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents, Anton was preceded in death by six brothers, Ben, Adolph, Clifford, Clarence, Edward and William Jr.; a sister, Eleanore Drangstveit; two half-brothers, Richard and Robert; two sisters-in-law, Ruth and Arlene Kulig and five brothers-in-law, Aloisy Halama, Art Drangstveit, Joe Puccini, Martin Marsolek and Ben Sosalla.

A Mass of Christian burial will be held on Monday, December 18, 2017 at 10:30 a.m. in Saint John's Catholic Church with burial in the Lincoln Cemetery both in Whitehall. Father Kennedy will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Sura-Wiersgalla American Legion Post #186.

Visitation will be Sunday, December 17, 2017 from 3-5 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall where a Christian prayer service will be held at 5:00 p.m. followed by a Knights of Columbus rosary. Friends may also call one hour prior to the service at the church on Monday.

Anton's family would like to thank Father Woodrow Pace and his associates for their commitment to be a part of Anton's life and to the staff and volunteers at the Gundersen Tri-County Care Center for all their kindness extended to Anton.
