Elmer Leonard Westlund, age 96, of Whitehall, died peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, July 31, 2018 in the Gundersen Tri-County Care Center in Whitehall. His daughter, Wendy and her husband, John, had the privilege of being by his bedside.

Elmer was born on December 5, 1921 in Mason, WI to Gabriel and Lilly (Wicklund) Westlund. He grew up with two brothers, Lenroot and Hjalmer and three sisters, Verna, Ruby and his twin, Mildred.

On July 21, 1945, before his honorable discharge from the United States Army, Elmer married Marian A. Nystrom in Mason, beginning a journey that would see them faithfully committed to one another for 68 years. Together they raised two children, a son, James and a daughter, Wendy. Elmer and Marian raised their children in Grand View, WI, living there for some 56 years. In 2010, Elmer and Marian moved to Whitehall, WI to be closer to family.

Elmer was motivated by his Christian faith. He used the time God gave him here on earth to serve and focus on others. Over the years, Elmer served in many leadership positions and on countless work projects at his church, Bethany
Baptist Church of rural Mason. Community service was also a significant part of his life as evidenced by involvement with the Grand View Volunteer Fire Department, town government and the Mason Cemetery Association.

Elmer is survived by a daughter, Wendy (John) Molis of Whitehall; a daughter-in-law, Rita Westlund of Louisville, KY; three grandchildren, Justin Westlund of Indianapolis, IN, Jason (Melissa) Molis of Whitehall and Nicole (Robert) Goplin of Green Bay; five great-grandchildren, Kaitlyn and Karli Molis, Grant, Carter and Madison Goplin and a brother, Hjalmer (Ruth) Westlund of Superior.

In addition to his parents and his wife, Marian, who preceded him in death on November 12, 2013, Elmer was preceded in death by a son, James; a brother, Lenroot and three sisters, Verna, Ruby and Mildred.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, August 4, 2018 at 2:00 p.m. in the Bethany Baptist Church with burial in the Mason Cemetery both in Mason. Pastor John Dudley will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by the Mason American Legion Post #516.

Friends may call from 12:30 p.m. until the time of service at the church on Saturday.
