John Ruben Byers, age 79, of LaCrosse, passed away on Tuesday, July 18, 2023 in the Mayo Clinic Health System in LaCrosse as a result of a stroke.

John was born on January 9, 1944  to Carroll and Marguerite (Evans) Byers.  He married Lillian B. Olson on May 5, 2001 in LaCrosse.  Lillian preceded John in death on July 19, 2011.

John spent most of his life in La Crosse. He was a life-long member of the First Presbyterian Church of La Crosse and was active in community affairs, especially the Moose Lodge. John was a longtime activist for the rights of people with disabilities.  He was an avid bicyclist and enjoyed watching Brewers' games at Schmidty's Supper Club Bar & Grill.

John is survived by his sister, Mary (Richard) Meyer of Sarasota, FL; five nephews, two nieces and many friends who were like family to him.

In addition to his parents and wife, John was preceded in death by two sisters, Nora and Nancy.

Memorial services will be held on Thursday, July 27, 2023 at 12:00 p.m. in the First Presbyterian Church in La Crosse (233 West Ave. So.).  Pastor Alex Jerve will officiate. A reception will follow at 1:00p.m. at the Moose Lodge in La Crosse (1932 Ward Ave.).  Burial will be in the Rest Haven Cemetery in Blair at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in John's name can be given to Aptiv (formally known as Riverfront, Inc.), which provides services for people with disabilities in several counties in western and southern Wisconsin (learn more at aptiv.org).

The Jack Funeral Home in Blair is assisting the family with arrangements.
