Maynard Oswald Clipper, age 81, of Whitehall, died on Tuesday, August 25, 2015 in the Gundersen Tri-County Hospital in Whitehall.

Maynard was born on September 15, 1933 in Taylor, WI to Theodore and Thelma (Post) Clipper. He grew up in Taylor except for a few years when the family moved to the state of Washington so his father could work in defense during World War II.

Maynard's first paying job was delivering newspapers. During his high school years he worked part time at Hanson's Grocery Store. One semester in college showed him he was not college material and he went to Milwaukee where he got a factory job that payed well but wasn't as much fun as working in a grocery store. He came back to Taylor and got a job in Black River Falls at a grocery store and then worked at Sather's Grocery Store in Blair until his marriage to Virginia Stai on May 28, 1954 in Taylor.

Maynard got a job at Piggly Wiggly in LaCrosse and worked there until he was hired by Kraft Foods as a sales representative for Kraft Foods in the LaCrosse area. He stayed with Kraft Foods until the opportunity to buy a grocery store in Whitehall occurred. In July of 1964, Maynard moved his family consisting of Virginia and three children, Craig, Kay and David to Whitehall. These were busy years building the business and making plans for a supermarket. After three years, the new store was built on what had been Briggs Transfer property. Years later, he added on to the store so he could offer a wider variety of food for sale, and later he added on a warehouse delivery system and an in store bakery.

Maynard was an active member of the Whitehall Lion's Club for more than forty years. He served on the Tri-County Memorial Hospital board for 37 years and was a member of the Whitehall Chamber of Commerce all the years he was in business in Whitehall. Maynard was also a member of the Whitehall Golf Course and served on its board.

Maynard volunteered to keep score with Len Ellison at high school basketball games for many years.

Maynard was thrilled when he and his family were awarded Citizen of Year at Beef & Dairy Days this year. He used that opportunity to thank the people present for their support through the years to make Whitehall a very good place to live and work.

Maynard is survived by his wife, Virginia; a daughter, Kay Boland of Whitehall; a son, David (Annette) Clipper of Whitehall and four grandchildren, Benjamin Clipper, Morgan,
Nickolas and Bryn Boland.

In addition to his parents, Maynard was preceded in death by a son, Craig and two brothers, Buz and Sidney.

Memorial services will be held on Saturday, August 29, 2015 at 11:00 a.m. in Our Saviour's Lutheran Church in Whitehall. Pastor Yvonne Marshall will officiate. Burial will be in the Lincoln Cemetery in Whitehall at a later date.

Visitation will be Friday, August 28, 2015 from 4-8 p.m. in the Jack Funeral Home in Whitehall and also one hour prior to the service at the church on Saturday.
