Sophie Myrtle Kolve Dahl lived most of her 97 years in the presence of nature. As a young girl, she ran barefoot through the meadows calling the cows home at milking time. When she married Alton Dahl in 1934 her life as a multi-tasking farmwife began. Tending her gardens and home, cooking for threshing crews, scrubbing clothes on a washboard and raising three sons were memories Sophie shared often. Milking cows by hand and later with Surge milking machines, tossing hay bales onto the barn elevator and keeping farm records were not foreign tasks to Sophie.



Life slowed down for Sophie as age took it's toll. She made her home in the Grandview Apartments after Alton passed away. Then, as her health declined, she decided it was time to move into the Grandview Care Center. Her last week there was spent with her three sons and a grandson's family visiting with her. Until her last day on earth, stories of the past remained in her memory bank. On her last day with us, she shared a girlhood story of ordering 98 cent dresses from a Chicago Mail-order catalogue. As a last treat on Tuesday night, she enjoyed a root beer float and then did her best to sign a wedding card to send a gift for an upcoming family wedding.


After breakfast on May 6, Sophie left the world to meet Alton in heaven. She had a chance to say goodbye to her sons, Elden (Judy), Merlin (Rose) and Will (Sandra) before leaving. Her memories will live on with her 16 grandchildren and many great-and-great great grandchildren. Stories told will include memories of Sophie and Alton's 67 year marriage which began in a little white parsonage in Mondovi, Wi on May 25, 1934 followed by a chicken dinner at the farm home of Sophie's parents Sophie and Martin Kolve.

A private gravesite memorial service will be held at a future date. At Sophie's request, no public services will be held.
